I’d like to send you a Film Crew T-shirt, but you do have to be on the crew to get it. The good news is that when you make a donation (tax-deductible in the U.S.) to the project you are actually joining our team, becoming a GrowthBuster, and – if you donate $100 or more, we’ll thank you by sending a T-shirt.

Problem is, we can’t decide which design is the best. Please help us decide, by voting for the one you want to wear. We also welcome your suggestions for other slogans or designs. Post your design or slogan to our facebook page, comment below with your suggestion, or send me an email. We’ll add your design to the ballot. We’ll produce a batch of the design that wins the most votes, and the winning designer will get an extra T-shirt free.

I’m not big on encouraging consumption, so schwag giveaways are not the norm around here. But discussing this at a recent brainstorming session, Mike (our new board chair) and I agreed that 1) you must wear clothing and 2) if your clothing makes a statement you’re actually saving a tree (no flyer or bumper sticker necessary, and you are starting conversations and encouraging critical thinking). We’re choosing a vendor offering lowest impact options and not using slave labor.

So, support this critical project, wear your GrowthBusters Film Crew T-shirt proudly, and introduce growthbusting to everyone you meet. Donate the old T-shirt you replaced to someone who needs it.

Why Support This Cause? The first film in the GrowthBusters documentary series is complete, but we still have a long way to go to get our society unhooked from growth addiction. We’re launching GrowthBusters Phase II next week. You can read all about it here, then select your position on our film crew and make a donation here.

Thank you for voting.

Our plans for 2013 are ambitious. To pull it off, we need more people than ever to step up and give to the mother of all causes – growthbusting. If we can’t find the cure for growth addiction, it won’t matter whether we save an endangered species, feed the hungry, use renewable energy, preserve habitat or cure cancer. So please reserve a portion of your year-end giving for GrowthBusters Phase II. (Reminder: click on a photo to enlarge it.)

  1. Al Pastars says:

Alaska has the “drill, baby, drill” crowd.

In our city we have the “grow, baby, grow” crowd.

  2. Roger Plenty says:

The ‘cancer cell’ one is the best of those above, but would be snappier, I think, if it were worded ‘Growth for its own sake is the philosophy of the cancer cell’

  3. Dave Gardner says:

We have a new submission from one of our readers. To vote for this one, just add a comment here indicating so.

100 years ago there was nothing here…and now it’s all Gone!

    • James says:

I like this one – and the cancer one.
Less is more which also applies to words too :-) I think the large “film crew” distracts and is redundant. Sorry! :-)

  4. Hi Dave,
How about a picture of a condom with the growthbusters logo above and then “weapon of mass protection”?

  5. Dave Gardner says:

That’s a cute idea, Bruce. BTW, for all reading here, you should see Bruce’s youtube video, One Planet, One Child: http://youtu.be/jpjN2er8V54

  6. Piyush says:

I am not submitting this for T-shirt candidacy because it is only applicable for US t-shirts if it were used for t-shirts, it is not that general but might be some amusement so thought I will write it. This dumb idea can be used in other contexts and could also be animated.

Show the Great Seal of the US [the bald eagle, which by the way nearly went extinct but is back now]. On the arrow side somewhere close to the arrows put a box that says:
    Growth Addiction -> War
On the olive branch side put a box that says:Sustainability -> Peace
    or something similar.

A more subtle manifestation could be the eagle’s head pointing to the right towards the arrow side [the actual seal has it on the left indicating a preference for peace], and left side shown as dotted, a directional arc on the top from the right head to the left one with the words “End Growth Addiction” [or something similar] on top of the arc. The could be animated if in a graphic.

    • Dave Gardner says:

No such thing as a dumb idea, so I welcome your suggestion in the spirit of brainstorming, Piyush. Thank you. Thanks, by the way, for putting your money where your mouth is, and supporting our non-profit project financially.

  7. Alice says:

Whichever design is selected, PLEASE use t-shirts made from organic cotton, or at least ones that are made in the U.S. There are way too many t-shirts with clever designs for all sorts of issues and events. Most are made from cotton produced with heavy chemical inputs and forced child labor (like in Kazakstan). The shirts are then constructed by women and children living like slaves in third world countries. Do we really want to be a part of those problems just to sport a neat slogan on a shirt? And likely a shirt we don’t even need? Thanks for listening.

  8. Dave Gardner says:

Alice, thanks for writing. We could not agree more. We have been reluctant to do the t-shirt thing, but – as I wrote – if it helps to change the world, and you give the shirt it replaced to someone who needs it, that helps. Yes, we will make sure the shirts are ethically and responsibly produced.
